Gender injustice is revealed in many forms. This includes in stereotypes, discrimination, subordination, impoverishment, backwardness, and in violence against women. Indonesian women still experience these forms of gender injustice because of a patriarchal culture, an economic political system and a social construction that positions women and men unequally. The strong politics of identification and religious fundamentalism make the women's rights situation worse. In addition, many national and regional policies don't actually protect women's interests. To develop gender awareness within our plural society, a strategy and precise approach is required. The strategy of community facilitation which includes activities that empower and strengthen women in groups or inter-group is an undeniable choice. To promote and to change gender awareness in the society surely requires the process of studying and takes a long time. This should be an on going commitment, carried out in a sustainable way, generating women cadres who are critical, smart, militant and pro-women and pro- poor. As well as improving the level of awareness in society, change at state and government levels also needs to be committed. Kalyanamitra believes that the true process of democratization in Indonesia needs to address gender justice. Improvements at ideological, economic, political and organizational levels need commitment from the state, government, as well as from the people. There needs to be open, transparent and responsible cooperation from all parties. There is only one objective: To create a prosperous Indonesia that has social and gender justice. |
